New Orleans Square

March 1967

New Orleans Square was opened in 1967 to, in the words of Walt Disney, "Class the joint up a bit." It was to feature elegant architecture, high-class entertainment, and fine dining.

New Orleans square encompasses two of Disneyland's most popular attractions -- the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. There had been plans for a "New Orleans Party Village" and an authentic cemetery tour (featuring burial structures purchased through leveraged buyouts of cemeteries all over New Orleans), but the popularity of existing attractions convinced Disney that they were unnecessary.

Trivia: New Orleans Square is, in fact, a perfect square.
