Main Street

July 1955

"Main Street, U.S.A. is America at the turn of the century,
the crossroads of an era. The gas lamps and the electric lamp,
the horse-drawn car and auto car, the family owned store and global chain.
Main Street is everyone's home town -- the heart line of American business."
-- Walt Disney

Main Street, the first area guest see when visiting Disneyland, is loosely based on Walt Disney's vague memories of growing up in the small town of Marceline (which a quick Internet search reveals is in France). It is supposed to invoke old-world feelings of community, togetherness, and intense, high-pressure commerce.

Flag pole

In the center of Town Square is a flag pole. The pole itself has a great history. It seems that one night, drunk out of his mind and trying to forget his bitter disappointment at being thrown off The Wizard of Oz for having the audacity to almost get killed by his Tin Woodsman makeup, Buddy Ebsen smashed into a (some would say "an") historic, antique flag pole in his home town. Wishing to quickly cover up the event, Ebsen slapped a couple of stamps on the thing and sent it to the first person he could think of -- Walt Disney, general delivery, Hollywood. Disney was so pleased by the attractive (if slightly dented) pole that he saved it for eventual installation in the park he wanted to build one day. As a reward for his generosity, Disney hired Ebsen to be filmed as reference footage for a new anamatronic figure and play Davy Crockett (but not at the same time).
